I want to begin this post by saying if you haven’t been to the UAE - you are definitely in need of a trip! Beyond the city of Dubai and the sacred Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, the UAE offers plenty in attractions. One of my favorites being the desert safaris. Now if you have been on any kind of safari you know that these activities usually leaves you changed - be it a wildlife safari at Maasai Mara or an ecological safari in the Amazon, these activities are usually breathtaking and almost life changing! Yes - I know - a ton of hyperbole but seriously guys, you have to try one of these!
My desert safari experience came as a part of a wedding trip that my friend of over 15 years planned. The safari began in the afternoon and was about a 45 minute drive from Dubai to the desert. Once we got to the desert we started off by riding ATVs and then carrying falcons and eagles. Yes people, you read that correctly - falcons and eagles. These animals are used for hunting and sport by the locals and it was great to see one up close! I was initially intimidated but then I remembered that I am #fearless, I can look danger in the eye and laugh without fear! I remembered that nothing can stop me from enjoying this once in a lifetime experience except my own fear and I wasn’t about to let that happen.
Once we got our blood pumping from the exhilaration of riding ATVs, we were off to the desert. Now, if you are reading this and own or know someone who owns a land cruiser, you need to keep reading this post! For the first time, I felt like people who own these cars aren’t using them to their full potential! Our drivers showed us exactly what a land cruiser was built for. Let me take a quick diversion and describe the cars we were in. On the outside it was your run of the mill land cruiser but on the inside, the cars were outfitted with railings on the roof. When we first got into the car, we asked what the railings were for and the driver answered very slyly - support. We didn’t understand this until we got to the desert. Once there, the driver literally said to us - hold on, it’s my turn now. He proceeded to driving into the desert at break neck speed! The dunes simply provided the perfect drifting location. Not sure what I mean by drift? Watch Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift for reference.
It was the most invigorating experience! The car tilted and twisted and sped across the desert much to our delight! We all caught ourselves squealing and catching our breath and some even saying their last rights! Ok I joke - but it got really dicey there for a moment! There is much to be said about this experience, but I’m a big fan of the saying that a picture is worth 1000 words. So I will give you some of my favorite highlights/ tips from this safari:
