There is something very liberating about taking yourself out for a meal alone. No one else to weigh in on the place and no one’s time to worry about besides your own. I have always loved eating while reading a book or just taking in my surroundings. Many people find eating alone a challenge or a cry of desperation—i.e. dining hall days when you didn’t want to get caught eating alone.
Going to a restaurant or café alone also opens doors of possibilities and opportunities. You never know who will sit next to you or what book that a nearby solo eater is reading that may stir a conversation that otherwise would have never taken place.
Another reason to take yourself on dates is to celebrate you! Everyday on this planet is a blessing, taking the time to enjoy your meal and appreciate the food and atmosphere can be surprisingly enjoyable. You don’t have to keep up with the conversation, and for a moment you can take in everything around you and truly focus on experiencing your meal instead of solely consuming it. I’ll admit it will probably feel weird at first, but the more you go the better it will get.
My favorite place to solo dine is a restaurant/café Madrid, Spain called Federal. It had the perfect atmosphere and table space. Are you a solo diner? Tell us your favorite place to go!
