Recently, my girls and I took a quick trip to the friendly Island of Sint Maarten to celebrate my 29th birthday lituation. This beautiful 33-square mile Island is divided into two—a Dutch side—where you can get finger licking good Caribbean food and offers a vibrant nightlife scene and the French side, which is more laid back, quiet with a traditional European feel. The Island lends itself to serene beaches and the perfect climate to relax and re-energize your mind, body and soul. In addition, there’s no other place in the Caribbean that is a hub for multi-island trips. You can easily take a day trip from St Maarten via a public ferry or private boat ride to the Islands of Anguilla, Saba or St. Barths. Now you see why Sint Maarten was a no brainer for me as the perfect location to bring in my birthday!
On the Island, we decided to stay at the Royal Palm Beach Resort where, at the time of our booking, we got quite a steal (thanks to the low season rates we received)! Yes, y’all if you are looking to save some money, visit the island during the off season, anytime between the months of May and June. This is when hotels advertise their best rates. The Royal Palm Beach Resort, is a 140-room property on the Dutch side, it’s just a 5 minutes’ drive from Princess Juliana International Airport, and a two-minute walk to Simpson Bay’s main row of restaurants, shops, bars, and casinos. As a result, Royal Palm Beach may be one of the only resorts in which you might never need to rent a car. When we arrived on the property, we were kindly greeted by the staff who were extremely professional and accommodating. They answered every question we had and shared with us a complete list of where to eat, shop, and the best tourist attractions on the island.
We stayed in a two bedroom, two baths condo-style room with a pull-out sofa bed in the common living space. The room came with a gorgeous balcony ocean view---making it quite accommodating for a group of girls who wanted to lay their heads in a comfortable hotel without having to break their bank accounts. Additionally, the rooms came fully equipped with a 40inch flat screen TV, full kitchen with a stove, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, appliances, cookware and tableware in case anyone was in the mood to do a little cooking. Both the living area and balcony were fully furnished with tables, chairs and a sofa. We had ample of space to just lounge and relax after a long day of sightseeing and fun activities. To note, all 140 of Royal Palm Beach Resort’s rooms are amazingly spacious, with the smallest one bedroom unit measuring around 1,000 square feet.
The hotel Amenities included:
Due to the central location of the resort, those who wish to escape the premise of the property and explore the rest of the island will find that a drive to anywhere on the Dutch side -- and even certain parts of the French side -- is relatively quick. The concierge is available to call a taxi driver for you if you need one or you have the option of taking the public bus, which stops right in front of the hotel. These varied modes of transportation make it very accessible to take a quick drive from the hotel to Maho Beach, Front Street and even Old Street in Phillipsburg (their equivalent to a downtown). And every time you grow hungry and crave some local Caribbean dish, I’m talking fried plantains, oxtail, jerk chicken or even gourmet cuisines and wish to stay closer to the property, there are tons of restaurants both high-end and affordable, located right across the street of the resort—seriously, only a two minute walk! and If you are in the mood to splurge a little, you will find small boutique shops located on the property, which happens to be tax free, as well as duty free! So be prepare to “shop till you drop”. Furthermore, for anyone craving a jamming nightlife experience, there’s a vibrant club scene as well as casinos all on the main road next to the resort. In my opinion, Royal Palm Beach Resort is the perfect location that offers you the opportunity to set yourself free and conveniently explore the island without limitation.
With all these amazing features that Royal Palm Beach Resort has to offer there were a few noticeable cons to staying at this property:
Even with the cons, I would still recommend staying at the Royal Palm Beach Resort. It was worth every dime that we spent. Bottom line, if you are looking for an affordable, safe, friendly, centrally located property with an isolated beachfront then look no further---Sint Maarten vacationers!
