Way before natural hair was a thing and the Kardashians were relevant enough to have a trend, African women were wrapping their hair as both part of their tradition and as a fashion statement. Today, headwraps have taken over the fashion industry and some of your favorite celebrities have been seen rocking them-- (Solange, Beyonce, Erika Badu etc.). I mean, who doesn’t love the vibrant and beautiful colors headwraps can add to our fashion ensembles. As a headwrap enthusiast, I am going to share with you how you too can rock your headwraps - either as a way to look elegant, chic or to simply protect your hair during the cold winter.
1. Protect and Serve
With the natural hair movement taking over by storm, headwraps can serve as the perfect way to protect your hair. If you're like me, living in New England where the winter months are a little too much for words, you'll appreciate a cover up. The cold weather can be very cruel to the hair as it damages the ends. Headwraps are your go-to, highly cost - efficient protective style once the cold weather hits. You can grab just one scarf from your winter accessories and change up your look using many different styles. Use a bright colored scarf and add a little color to your winter outfit or use multiple scarves and get your Badu on!
Maybe it's wash day, but you just want to make a quick run to the grocery store or you're running late and don't want to put too much time into your hair- headwraps are your friend. They are there to protect your hair while you serve face. Yassss!!!
2. Crowns Up!
One of my favorite singer/songwriters and overall artist, India Arie taught us that being a Queen starts with our mentality. Head wraps are the perfect symbol of royalty. This stylish look serves as icing on the cake when confident women wear them. For a long time many young women, especially brown skinned girls, have altered their looks to mirror what is perceived as beautiful, which in many cases does not reflect their own ethnicity and culture.
Head wraps serve as a symbol of pride that comes with being a woman. It doesn't matter what outfit you pair with a head-wrap, they always depict a level of class and elegance. “Queens recognize Queens,” is what I always say. So the next time you're feeling down, put your hair in a bun, throw a scarf or two over it and walk out the door with your head held high.
3. How Bad is it?
Every girl knows about the complexity that comes with a bad hair day. You can have on a fly outfit and damn near perfect shoes but you may still find yourself turning your room upside down while figuring out the right style for your hair. If you're like me, if everything (clothes, shoes, hair, bag, nails....) don't come together, you won't leave the house that day! You know when you find the perfect outfit, you get an added boost of confidence.
Seriously, there is something very sexy about a woman who carries herself with a hint of attitude that says "I know I look good". How can you do that when your hair will not cooperate? Headwraps to the rescue!
4. Style & Grace
In addition to everything previously mentioned, wraps are just plain stylish! Most times the first thing you'll notice is the wrap sitting there complimenting a pair of shoes or clutch. I've come to appreciate larger wraps because obviously the more volume, the better. For some, simplicity does the trick. From weddings to date nights, head wraps can fit right into any occasion. The key to wearing your wrap as an accessory is to let it stand out! In the spring and summer, throw some bright colors on. When it's cold out, you can add a few more than just one and bring Ms. Badu to life while keeping your head and ears warm. You can also mix and match prints to give yourself an edgy look.
Head wraps can be styled like a bun, a bow or in several knots to be even edgier. Whatever your style is, head-wraps can be manipulated to fit right in.
5. Why blend in when you were born to Stand Out?
If for nothing else, head wraps will have you looking different. It has an unparalleled individuality to it. Unlike a hat, you get to make the head wrap fit you exactly as you like. It is not a one size fits all type of style. You can twist it, wrap it, bend it and shape it to fit your style, occasion and mood. Wraps stand out and give you that 'wow' factor. It takes a certain amount of confidence to be daring and to wear headwraps in a world full of Brazilian and Remy hair. (Sidebar: We are not taking away from these hairstyles in any way- kudos to every hairstyle.). When your hair is perfectly fine but you choose to cover it as a statement, you are saying: I'm here and you WILL SEE ME :-)
I cannot speak for all the women who wear head wraps on a daily basis, but I know for me, it serves as a crown. I feel a lot more confident being a queen with my crown sitting on my head twisted, wrapped up and most times very colorful! .Head wraps are here to stay and it's time you join the movement of style, protection and confidence. It's a complicated yet simple way to be in control of your wardrobe.
