I’ve moved around all my life - about twelve countries on three continents to be exact! The one thing that I do regret is not having taken more pictures. Why? Because, there are so many occasions and accomplishments that have taken place in life that I desperately want to look back on! Like that national swim meet in Mombasa-- now that only exists in my memories. I would have loved to have a picture of my younger self grinning from ear to ear with my silver medal!
What is it about pictures that I love so much?
1. They remind me that things will get better.
Life throws so many curveballs at us and sometimes we feel as though we cannot come out from under a bad cloud. This is when pictures come through for me. When I look at my childhood swim meet pictures, I smile because I remembered that right before I won that medal, I spent six days a week training for a meet that no one in my family had ever competed in. I was scared and intimidated but looking through those images remind me of my accomplishments, and show me that as long as I put in the work and stay focused, things will get better.
2. They remind me of a time when happiness wasn’t such a foreign concept.
I have been through so many low points over the last couple of months and looking back at my old pictures has helped me remember how far I have come. It puts a smile on my face and sometimes that’s all that is needed. A picture of you taken with ice cream that spilled on your shirt (which none of your friends told you about … you know who you are) is a great reminder that you can be happy regardless of the circumstance.
3. They remind me that I am stronger than I know.
Pictures are evidence that a frozen moment in time can be representative of strength. That time you took a trip with your girlfriends despite all the apprehension that was holding you back? Or the time when you quit your job and started your own business? You did that! You. Yes, you with all the apprehension and uncertainty. You take a look at that picture of your launch day and remember that you are a #badass. You got this.
