One of the most important decisions I have made in my life is the commitment to love and accept my authentic self.
It all started when I began growing to love my authentic woman self. The more comfortable I became with the idea of self-love, the more I sought out strategies for self-empowerment. I began accepting my flaws and refused to seek validation from society and from anyone I was romantically involved with. I distanced myself from people whose energy provoked negativity and from those who sought to stifle my dreams. Truthfully, there were moments of loneliness in my journey to self-love, leaving me to often wonder where was Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (my fearless self-lover best friend in my head) when you needed her? –but still I pressed on.
With no roadmaps or guidelines, the more I freely loved myself, the more I found a sense of heroism in my personal experiences, my imperfections, my intelligence, my passion and my inner power as a woman. I realized that staying true to my authentic self was the best thing that I could have ever done for my life. More than ever, I feel empowered and have the confidence to tackle anything life throws my way.
To anyone reading this, I am sharing my experience not as an ‘after’ picture but as someone who is still learning to embrace change and growth. The journey to becoming a fearless self-lover is not easy, and at times self-doubt and the need for approval from others will kick in; however, it is important to recognize that your own amour propre (self-love) is the foundation from which happiness flows.
I leave you with my truth and honesty. I want you to always remember this ---You have inestimable worth that comes from your creator. You do not need anyone to validate you as a woman; you are beautiful just as you are in your imperfect authentic self. Now, Go forth and exude self-love!
