Fitting in is easier than standing out. Which are you trying to do? Which are you trying to be: the wallpaper or the art piece?
It's easy to look around and decide that status quo is where 'it's at'. FOMO - Fear Of Missing Out as described by one of my great friends is real. Too many people are wrapped up in who is doing what, and the latest trend - instead of focusing on developing their own individuality. When was the last time you stopped and said - I'm doing X because it's what makes me happy, and not because Kimmy K West loves it or because your whole 'crew' is into it. When was the last time you said, “this is my choice!”
It's easy to see or follow what people around you are doing and 'go with that flow' but is that what it takes to be extraordinary? I choose not to conform to a lot of what my peers deem 'acceptable' because I choose to be different. I choose to stand out and live my life differently. I choose not to blend in with the wallpaper but to stand out like the proverbial sore thumb.
It's easy to pick up smoking, drinking or even impulse buying because others are doing it. What benefit do these things bring to you? Do you get more respect for being part of the crowd? No. Many times people ask me why I choose not to drink and I have a couple of reasons; however, the constant in all these conversations is the level of respect people have for me for being different and standing my ground.
Being like everybody else never won anyone a prize. In fact being like everybody else stunts your creativity. If all you see and do is what everybody else is seeing and doing then when do you get to think out of the box? When do you get to offer different perspectives? Life is too short to be lived as many people do - conforming to the status quo.
I choose to be different.
