Girl, you are always gone! Said everyone who knows me ! How can you afford to jet set to all of these exotic locations? Do you even work? Well, I’m here to share some of my money saving tips that have allowed me to have frequent travel this summer.
This is self explanatory and cannot be overstated. It’s important to capitalize on savings by booking your flight and hotel early. I’ve had weddings in the Middle East, Europe and Africa all in the first six months of the year! Thank goodness that weddings are usually planned for at least a year! Take advantage of knowing dates in advance. The earlier you book your flight, the cheaper the ticket! Buying a ticket to Burkina Faso a year before the wedding date for example costs about $400 - $650. Buying it a month or two before your trip costs about $900 - $2500! Buy the tickets as early as possible.
Create monthly savings goals
This was probably the most tasking, because it requires self discipline like no other. Being the avid shopper that I am, this is probably my most challenging tip. I’ve come to a place where I set a goal amount that I need to save for a trip and even if it means not going out, eating ramen for two weeks or opting out of concerts, I keep my eyes on the prize: vacation! I think you always need a carrot at the end of your stick lol … I always check my bank account almost obsessively to ensure that every penny I should be saving is being saved. I avoid Homegoods and restaurants like the plague when saving for a trip! Get behind me shopping devils! lol
Sometimes you can’t afford it. No need to break the bank and go to Turks and Caicos when you know that it is a) an expensive plane ticket and b) it is an expensive stay once you are on the island so why go? There are certain places that I just know are dream locations for me. No matter how much I save, I know that I won’t be happy spending crazy amounts of money on one vacation. I don’t want to be broke coming back from a vacation! That makes no sense! It’s like being deep in debt after a wedding … but I digress.
Try and purchase as a group
This has saved me on more occasions than I can count. Group purchases are usually subsidized by airplane companies and hotels. Hotels and flight companies are looking to fill up rooms and seats - especially in off season times. And the more you can add people to a booking, the cheaper it becomes as you are helping these companies fill otherwise empty seats and rooms. Find 5 or more people that want to go where you are going and SAVE money! Why wouldn’t you pick an option where you can hang out with your friends for cheap? Many times we get closed-off thinking that we can’t find people but if the deal is really good, you will!
Capitalize on off season savings
This is something that most people need to take more advantage of! Lookup island locations and figure out when peak season is and when the resorts aren’t the most popular. For example my girlfriends and I took a trip to St. Maarten during off season (June) and paid much less than we would have if we went in April for example. This is one of the easiest ways to ensure that you travel for less.
