So, when did feminism equal being overly sexual and publicly nude? I know Susan B. Anthony is rolling in her grave right now. Like seriously, I am tired of society pushing down our throat the hyper-sexualized and promiscuous images of women and referring to them as #feminism or even #womenempowerment. You can’t open any magazine, or watch any movie without seeing these images that defeat our efforts in achieving equality. This obsession with sex and the need to objectify women to please men sexually is quite alarming. Where did we go wrong as a society? When did we turn into a society that only speaks the language of the genitals? As a feminist, ‘someone who believes in the pursuit of equality with regards to women’s rights’, I am all for women owning the rights to their bodies and doing as they please with it, but come on, there’s a thin line between feeling empowered and just looking like a thot: case in point Amber Rose’s #Slutwalk.
In my opinion, there’s nothing feminist about her event. Women holding signs referring to themselves as hoes, sluts etc., and being encouraged to take ownerships of those titles as if they are some kind of accomplishment, while wearing outfits with their tits and butt cheeks out simply defeats the purpose of addressing the rape culture that exists in our society and the overall agenda of feminism. If this is what feminism is turning into, then something has gone seriously wrong with the education of girls. We need to go back to the drawing board, and teach boys how to RESPECT women, we need to go back to the basics and teach young girls to have high self-esteem, self-love and self-confidence. To teach girls to know their worth and value and to recognize that what they have to offer with their mind is far greater than relying on their bodies for attention.
