Names… the only thing in life that are truly our own. The only things that we own for the rest of our lives, and yet for some bizarre reason people believe it is okay to disrespect them without a second thought. I am tired of listening to people give nicknames because they don’t want to try to correctly pronounce someone else’s name. Or listen to people tell someone that they can pronounce it differently because it is spelled like something else. A name is not up for conversation, regardless of how you think it should be pronounced. If a name is said with an ‘accent’ say it with an accent. If it is hard to pronounce, try sounding it out; try saying it. I remember in school when teachers wouldn’t even try to say someone’s name. Trying, contrary to popular belief will not kill nor embarrass you. What it will do, is show the person whose name you are trying to pronounce, that you care enough to try. At the end of our days our names will be the only things that carry on, so please stop acting like saying them is an inconvenience to you.
